Griffin is a PhD candidate in the Sociology Department at UW-Madison who specializes in quantitative methods. He’s originally from Kansas City, Missouri, and holds a BA in Political Science from UNC-Chapel Hill (highest honors) and an MS in Sociology from UW-Madison. He is proud to call all three states home.
Griffin tutors both the ACT/SAT and academic math and social sciences. He is particularly fond of lecturing statistics and is a multiple award winner of teaching prizes from UW-Madison, especially for his work as a lecturer for SOC 360, Statistics for Social Science I.
As a tutor, Griffin enjoys working with students who want to take ownership of the learning process. He is especially interested in helping students understand the “why” behind what they are learning—whether that means exploring why algebra works the way it does or why a semicolon is used in a particular context. He has found that cultivating curiosity not only makes the process more engaging, but also leads to stronger understanding and better long-term results.
In his free time, he has myriad interests: lifting weights and competing in 5Ks; chess and puzzling; playing and listening to music (he was a DJ at WXYC in Chapel Hill); and training and walking with his dog, Clio. Joining him in all of these activities is his lovely wife, Sophie, who is a sixth-grade math teacher at Spring Harbor Middle School.
