Luis grew up near Rockford, IL, where his teachers instilled in him a love for learning and education. Growing up, Luis was heavily involved with music as a clarinetist. He would often spend his evenings after school helping younger students practice their instruments and master their pieces. He would begin his collegiate career at Rock Valley College, where he obtained his Associate in Arts degree. He began developing an interest in science communication as a participant in Demo’s After Dark, a fun night of exciting experimental demonstrations.
Luis would transfer to North Central College, where he graduated with a degree in Biology. His interests in science communication would lead him to become a member of SMACS, Student Members of the American Chemical Society. He enjoyed engaging with the public by showcasing chemistry demonstrations. Luis served as a liaison for BioFirst, an academic group dedicated to supporting first-generation students in biology. There, he mentored a small group of students and discussed learning and professional development strategies with them. Luis also enjoyed volunteering in the Emergency Room at Edward’s Hospital.
After living in Illinois his whole life, Luis moved to Wisconsin to work as a Scientist at a biotechnology company in the area. In his free time, he enjoys reading books, playing board games and video games, and spending time with his family and friends.
