Matt grew up in New Rochelle, NY, a suburb of NYC. After studying physics and music at the University of Rochester, he joined the DC Teaching Fellows program and taught physics and AP physics in the DC Public School system while completing his MA in science education at American University. While in DC, he coached his school’s robotics, lacrosse, and softball teams and advised the school’s guitar and skateboard clubs. Missing music, Matt returned to graduate studies in music theory at CUNY Queens College. While working on his second MA, he tutored for some of the biggest tutoring companies in NYC, skateboarding from student to student all along the island of Manhattan (sometimes while eating a slice of pizza). Matt then began his PhD studies at UW-Madison, during which he was awarded the Mellon Public Humanities Fellowship, which had him working at Maydm, a non-profit that provides STEM learning opportunities to underserved populations. During his time in Madison, he has volunteered at art and music events and at the Art+Lit Lab’s Lab3 project. Matt has also displayed some of multimedia work in local galleries. During the concert seasons, Matt writes for the Cap Times in Madison, reviewing the major classical music ensembles in town. Currently, Matt works as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Music Theory at Lawrence University. In his research and teaching, Matt employs innovative multimodal pedagogies, de-centers and diversifies the music curriculum, and exploring cross-curricular connections.
Outside of work, Matt always enjoys a good chat, especially about music, skateboarding, snowboarding, skiing, ultimate frisbee, and disc golf.
