Sam grew up in a suburb of Milwaukee. He attended the University of Chicago, where he earned a dual BA in Statistics and East Asian Studies and Languages. His academic interests lie in ancient Chinese philosophy and writing, particularly Confucianism. Sam tutored middle and high school students through his church throughout college and has worked as a classroom instructor at Upward Bound, a college readiness program for high school students. After completing his undergraduate degree, he earned a Master’s in Philosophy from the Yenching Academy at Peking University in Beijing where he wrote his thesis on friendship in the Analects. He moved to Madison to work as a Quality Manager at Epic Systems, where he tested healthcare software and wrote technical documentation. He is currently working as an instructor at Mathnasium and plans to substitute teach in the Stoughton school district for the upcoming school year.
Sam’s varied experience in both the academic and professional worlds means he can offer students advice regardless of where they see themselves in the future. In his free time, Samuel enjoys playing board games, reading, and hiking.
